3 or More Applications Are Used by 83% of Workers
You’ll find it tough to recruit in a full employment economy. So try to embrace intelligent automation and structure proven processes to grow profitably. Do not rely on more people to complete tasks inside your company. Instead use smart artificial intelligence (AI) to automate the many processes your small business does every day.

Employees Will Accept a Pay Cut to Work from Home
Because of the available technology today, working remotely is as effective as working at the office. And this is giving businesses more flexibility when it comes to where their employees choose to work. But some people prefer working remotely so much, they are willing to take a pay cut.

If you don’t offer remote work as an option, you will limit the talent pool of applicants at your company. Not to mention your current employees might look elsewhere because they want to work remotely.

3 Secrets to Protecting Your Small Business Data
A recent data breach at German IT service provider Citycomp has resulted in a flood of data being published online — including financial and private information on all of Citycomp’s clients. You need to know how to fortify your defenses against data breaches.
The data breach included a client list that covered major companies such as Oracle, Airbus, and Porsche. More than that — seventy thousand services and storage systems are now publicly available.
Cybercriminals Believe Breaching an IT Service Provider like Citycomp is the Ultimate Win By cracking the defenses of a single business, criminals get the keys to dozens — or even hundreds — of the service provider’s clients’ business networks. However, amateur hackers are far more likely to pursue an easier target like your small business.
The Cost -to the Criminal- Conducting Cybercrime has Continued to Drop The rise of malware as a service is allowing amateur hackers to join the ranks of more seasoned cybercriminals. Not surprisingly, research shows that small businesses now make up the majority of commercial cyberattack victims.

10 Rules Small Businesses Must Follow as a Result of Email Spam Laws
There are nearly 4 billion active email users around the world. So it makes sense that email is one of the most popular ways for businesses to reach out to potential customers.
But you cannot simply reach out to anyone and everyone via email whenever you see fit. There are anti-spam laws in place to prevent businesses from abusing this communication method. In the U.S., the CAN-SPAM Act includes a wide array of laws related to commercial emails. The GDPR in the E.U. and Canada’s CASL laws may also apply to businesses in the U.S. if they have any international customers on their email lists.
Email Spam Laws To help you stay compliant, here are some of the top rules for email marketers to be aware of. These may not include every single law that applies to your business, so it’s important to look into relevant laws in your area or in the countries where your customers reside as well. However, many of these email spam laws include common themes. And email marketing platforms often make compliance fairly straightforward.

What is a Lateral Fishing Attack and How Can It Threaten Your Business?
Most business owners know what a phishing attack is. And this awareness has lowered the success rate of many phishing attacks. But hackers being hackers they have adapted and evolved with a new and growing type of account takeover attack. It is called lateral phishing.
What is Lateral Phishing? Regular phishing attacks generally send an email from an account designed to look like a legitimate business. With more people aware of this scheme, it is getting harder to fool people.
Hackers have found a workaround to this problem by first taking control of an account in an organization. Once they are successful, they leverage this account to launch the attacks.
The success rate of this type of attack is almost guaranteed because the recipient recognizes the email account. Everyone from contacts within the company to partners, vendors, and personal friends outside of the organization can be victimized.
Researchers from Barracuda, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego studied lateral phishing over the past year. The study and report looked at how this form of attack is becoming so pervasive. This..

Corporate Transparency Act Creates Regulatory Burden for Small Business
Beyond their intended goal, the cost of government regulations have far-reaching consequences. As a result, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) strongly opposes The Corporate Transparency Act of 2019.
Corporate Transparency Act of 2019 The bill, H.R. 2513, starts off like this:
It wants to ensure people who form corporations or limited liability companies in the U.S. disclose the beneficial owners. This is to prevent wrongdoers from exploiting U.S. corporations and limited liability companies for criminal gain. With the goal of assisting law enforcement in detecting, preventing and punishing different crimes. This includes terrorism, money laundering, and other misconduct involving U.S. corporations and limited liability companies, and for other purposes.
Any law-abiding individual will agree with what the bill is trying to do, but as they say, the devil is in the details. And one of the details is the fact that it places additional burdens on small businesses. Th..
How to Create a Mobile Device Policy for Your Small Business
Smartphones and other mobile technologies are as important to the modern office as paper and pens were years ago. They help your small business increase productivity by 85% if used properly. But there are security and employee use concerns.
Small Business Trends spoke with TRUCE Software CEO, Joe Boyle. He explained how to create a mobile device policy that works for your small business.
Creating a Mobile Device Policy He started by talking about how any policy needs to balance mobile device usage and compliance.
Simple and Effective Policies “We spend a lot of time talking with our customers about how they use simple and effective mobile device management policies,” he said. “We think about them being simple, smart and enforceable.”
Small businesses need to start putting one of these policies together by asking some simple questions. Laying some groundwork for a policy means deciding what the goals of letting mobile devices into the workplace are.
Avoid the One Size Fits All Trap These can include both long term and short-term objectives. Think about a team that’s involved with..
After Incorporating a Business: What You Need to Know
Start contemplating the right business structure for your business. You’ve probably heard corporations generally demand more administrative time and resources than other entities. For example, it takes more time and money to meet all your compliance requirements as a corporation than as an LLC. And sole proprietors fall into that easier to manage class of businesses too.
However, consider the major reduction in the corporate tax rate. As a result, the C Corporation becomes a more attractive option for more businesses. And even small businesses may find this the case. Do you plan to form a C Corporation? Then check out these things you’ll need to know.
After Incorporating a Business 1. Get a Tax ID and Open a Corporate Bank Account One of the first things you’ll need to do is get a tax ID (or EIN, Employer ID Number) with the IRS. Think of it like a social security number for your corporation. Review the criteria and apply for an EIN on the IRS website. There’s no cost for getting an..

12 Small Business Tips from Podcasts Used by the Pros
Not all the advice that a budding business leader hears on a podcast will be particularly actionable or beneficial. There is, however, some very good information and perspectives out there. To help newer leaders be more aware of things they can and should do in regards to their business, we asked members of Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) the following:
“What is the best actionable tip you’ve gotten from a podcast? Why did it strike a chord with you?”
Actionable Business Tips Here’s what YEC community members had to say:
1. Double Down on Successful Channels “From a risk management standpoint, I’ve always been tempted to diversify early on until a ‘Marketing School‘ episode. Doubling down on channels that work extremely well is a great idea. With scarce resources, it’s best to maximize the ROI opportunities of your most impactful channel, and branch out before the point of saturation. That doesn’t exclude limited tests in between, of course.” ~ Mario Peshev, DevriX

When Contacting Your Business, Generation Z Prefers Phones Over Social Media
Social media gives consumers more access to the brands they like. And brands are using these channels to engage with their customers on a more personal level. But this relationship is changing as users reexamine the impact of social media on their lives.
A survey from Ooma is highlighting this trend, as it reveals Gen Zers prefer communicating using the phone or in-person with local businesses. Only 17% of Generation Z say they like to use social media to communicate with local businesses.
The reasons they state include being impersonal (30%) and taking longer to get a response (35%). So they use a phone because it is much faster to get things done compared to texting and social media
So, it is not surprising email is the least preferred method of communicating for this group. Without the right notification system in place, an email can remain unopened for some time.
However, the need to communicate quickly and getting a response is not limited to Gen Zers only. In the press releas..
Google Maps finally lets you plan ‘mixed modes’ travel
Sometimes getting home is a journey.
If it takes a few transit methods to get from a party to your front door, Google Maps didn't used to be much help. But, as announced Tuesday, the navigation app can now give transit directions that include different modes.
“Mixed modes” will soon show up on the transit tab and will include ride-sharing and cycling options within the public transit directions. Instead of you having to manually piece together a trip, the app puts together different options for you.
You can get detailed information about ride-sharing, like the cost of either an Uber or Lyft and the different types of rides, like a carpool or SUV and how long it'll take to get to you. The app will give info about the train or bus you're catching and how much traffic to expect on the way. But you still have to book an Uber or Lyft in its respective app. Read more…

In fact, small businesses have found themselves sued at an unprecedented rate in the last several years. And this often happened over websites that were inaccessible. In the U.S., the number of federal website accessibility lawsuits reached 2.2K in 2018. That works out to a 177% increase over 2017.
You own a small to medium sized business (SMB). And remember some of your potential customers are people with disabilities.
Lawsuits sometimes turn out to be questionable or even unscrupulous in nature. And here the onus falls on lawyers who specialize in this type of lawsuit and not on people with disabilities. So it pays for SMBs to be aware of the compliance issues they may encounter.
That way businesses can proactively arm themselves with convenient and cost-effective ways to address problems with accessibility before lawsuits happen.

Remote Workers: The Biggest Cybersecurity Risk Your Business Faces
If your small business has an online presence, there are many vectors of attack hackers can use to find vulnerabilities. And as more of these businesses use remote workers, it becomes yet another point of attack which can be exploited. Yet, only half of U.S. small businesses have updated their remote work security policy in the past year.
The data comes from Nationwide’s fifth annual Business Owner Survey. In this year’s report, Nationwide is highlighting remote workers and cybersecurity. This is a timely topic which addresses the ever-changing environment of today’s workforce.
More people are working remotely and if businesses use freelancers they can be very remote, as on the other side of the globe. This means they have to protect their digital assets with robust cybersecurity as well as cyber insurance.
However, small businesses are lagging behind when it comes to implementing all of the security and protection measures in place. In addressing this particular issue in the press ..
What Small Businesses Can Learn From the US Women’s National Soccer Team
Sponsored Post
I spend most of my weekends watching my daughter’s U15 soccer games or driving to tournaments, so it’s only natural that I was riveted watching the US Women’s soccer team’s World Cup run. And as someone who feels strongly about teaching girls about teamwork and the importance of helping each other, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see the #USWNT’s victory parade on Broadway and to watch them on the Espy awards and late-night television. Although they’ve taken women’s soccer to new levels of popularity, the influence of the team is expanding far beyond the field — they are driving the equality conversation, championing #equalpay, and motivating a new generation of athletes and advocates.
As a marketer who works with small businesses, I naturally thought about what inspiration small businesses could take away from Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Rose Lavelle, and their teammates.
Here are just a few things small businesses can learn from the #USWNT Leadership is important..
Amazon claims its Rekognition software can now detect fear
It seems that just like bees, Amazon can sense your fear.
Because nothing says “nightmare scenario” quite like a giant tech corporation everyone uses knowing what you're feeling, Amazon announced on Monday that Rekognition, its controversial facial recognition tool, can now detect a person's fear.
The update includes “improved accuracy for emotion detection (for all 7 emotions: ‘Happy’, ‘Sad’, ‘Angry’, ‘Surprised’, ‘Disgusted’, ‘Calm’ and ‘Confused’)” but, just for kicks, I guess, “added a new emotion: ‘Fear’.”

Hackers can ransomware your fancy digital camera
Not even your precious memories are safe from hackers.
That much was made clear at the annual DEF CON hacking conference in Las Vegas, where a security researcher demonstrated just how easy it is to remotely encrypt a digital camera with ransomware. And once that happens, you can say goodbye to all your photos — unless you pay up.
The specific camera in question was a Canon EOS 80D, but, as Eyal Itkin explained to the early Sunday morning crowd of seemingly hungover hackers, it's likely not the only model vulnerable.
“If you can do something to cameras, you have many potential victims you can affect,” he observed. “Would you pay to get your camera back?” Read more…

With more and more companies using cloud technology for AI applications, the demand for Google Cloud architects is on the rise. The Google Cloud Platform is a suite of computing services (the same ones that power Google Search and YouTube) and according to Global Knowledge’s Salary Survey for 2018, a GCP Cloud Architect can expect salaries on average of $139,529. The Black Hat cybersecurity conference app has a cybersecurity problem
Look, we get it: cybersecurity is hard.
Still, you'd think the folks at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas this week would have a better handle on things. And yet, according to noted French security researcher Baptiste Robert, they still managed to release a conference app that could put attendees' phones at risk.
The conference, which is now in its 22nd year, runs Aug. 3-8, and is ground zero for cybersecurity companies peddling their wares. It's followed by the DEF CON hacking conference, also in Las Vegas, which has a decidedly non-corporate ethos.
“The official Android app of #BHUSA is a joke,” wrote Robert, who is in town for both Black Hat and DEF CON. “For an event of this size this is not serious @BlackHatEvents.” Read more…

Turns out your office printer is a huge cybersecurity risk
Consider the office printer.
Massive, hulking things — the devices looming in the corner of workplaces around the world have come to represent untold hours of frustration in the form of printer jams and toner problems. According to security researchers set to present their findings this Saturday at the DEF CON hacking convention in Las Vegas, they also happen to be a cybersecurity nightmare.
Daniel Romero Pérez and Mario Rivas Vivar, researchers at NCC Group, announced the discovery of major vulnerabilities on Thursday in name-brand printers made by the likes of Xerox, HP, Lexmark, Kyocera, Brother, and Ricoh. NCC Group shared some of the researchers' findings with Mashable ahead of the aforementioned Aug. 10 talk, and they're enough to elicit serious double take. Read more…

21% of Your Employees May Think They’re More Qualified Than You
In every organization, there is a system of hierarchy. And human nature being what it is, the merits of one person achieving a position of power over another is questioned. Did they really earn it, and more importantly are they qualified?
According to a new survey from ResumeLab, 21.7% of its respondents believe they are more qualified than their manager. The number goes up to one in three workers when it comes to remote employees. And all in all, 61% say they believe they can handle the daily responsibilities of their manager.
In addition to determining if they are more qualified than their managers, the survey also asked if they would subvert their manager and what they would do differently if they were in charge.
So, where does this belief/confidence they are more qualified come from?
A More Educated Workforce In the report for the survey, ResumLab says the U.S. population is more educated than ever. And people with college degrees filled 9 in 10 jobs in the last year. So, it is..

One Skill That Every Business Owner Needs to Manage Cash Flow
Sponsored Post
Ask any startup entrepreneur what is the most important thing they should spend their time on in business and you’ll get a lot of different answers.
Some will say product development. Product leadership and a great product is essential, they feel.
Others say that a business is nothing without its people. Building a strong team they feel is the most important role of a startup founder.
Still others say that managing expenses is critical. They believe that a business that doesn’t manage its cash flow and expense level is doomed to fail.
These are all important, but all of these pale in comparison to one other skill that I believe is most important of all. It is the one thing that forms the foundation for everything else you do in business … I partnered with Microsoft 365 to share this with you and more on The Growth Center: One Skill Every Business Owner Needs to Manage Cash Flow.

Office Relocation Could Benefit 68% of Your Employees
A new survey from Clutch reveals an office relocation has a positive effect on 68% of employees. This is not surprising because most relocations are made to improve current conditions.
The employees in the survey say the benefits of a new location are more comfort (67%) and space (61%). With these improvements, workers are more likely to feel positive and get inspired, which in turn can increase productivity levels.
The problem for small businesses is, they can’t always afford to move to a bigger or better location. So, they have to find creative ways to make their office feel new while continuing to inspire their employees. But if a move is happening, it is important to take the needs of employees and logistics into consideration.
Kristen Herhold, who wrote the report, says “Businesses looking to move office spaces should take employee desires into account when choosing the new location. They should also be communicative and open to feedback, which will help make the transition to ..
